She might be feeling good as h*ll, but things weren't always easy for our self-love goddess. The Rumors hitmaker recently opened up about life in the spotlight and the struggles it once called for. Here's how Lizzo learned to overcome the haters and become the body-positive icon we know and love...
On Friday, August 13, the 33-year-old sat down with Apple Music's Zane Lowe to give us a glimpse at the face behind the invaluable talent. Unfortunately, from the sounds of it, Lizzo had to overcome a lot of hurdles before climbing her way to the top. "This is the biggest insecurity," she began of the one thing she can't "hide behind:" as a plus-sized artist, her appearance has always been under constant speculation. "It's like, 'How dare a pop star be fat?'" the singer remarked.

Safe to say, a whole lot has changed since then. “I had to own that,” she recalled. Not only has the unapologetic artist learned to practice self-love, but it’s gone on to change more lives than her own. “I was watching a commercial, and it was these big girls in it, and it had nothing to do with being big. And I was like… did I do that?” the singer proudly revealed. Yes, sis, you did.
But unfortunately, while the star has made waves over in Hollywood, there's still lots more to be done. "There's still so many people who suffer from being marginalized systemically," Lizzo confessed. "Meanwhile, there's a plus-size Black girl at the Grammys. But plus-size Black women are still not getting the treatment they deserve in hospitals and from doctors and at work."
To put it simply, "We got a long way to go," as the artist explained. And in the meantime? You can find Lizzo continuing to preach self-love for the rest of us, one hit single at a time. That being said, check out the pop icon's latest song, Rumors, featuring another fearless diva (psst, Cardi) here.
